Coquina versus Hurricane David, 1979
Score: Coquina 1, David 0
We were aboard at the dock. Our house was being fumigated for fleas
so we couldn't go home if we wanted to. Winds were forecast for 30 knots
and ended up around 60-70 knots peak. No damage to Coquina, but some other
boats at the dock needed help with extra lines. Discovered boat will heal
over 25 degrees under bare poles beam-on to the wind in the slip. In the
morning the dock was 3 feet underwater.
Coquina versus Hurricane Charlie, 1986
Score Coquina 1, Charlie 3
We were sailing back from the Governor's Cup and stayed awhile in Solomon's
Island. This allowed Charlie to catch up to us and give us an ever increasing
north
wind and incredible southbound current. After trying until sunset to get
north, we
finally gave up and took shelter in the Little Choptank. Charlie gets a 3
for catching
us by surprise (it was not forecast the day before at all), stirring up sediment
in the
fuel tank, and ripping the triple-reefed main off the mast when the full
force hit right
after dark. Estimated wind in the 50-70 knot range. Coquina still gets a
1 since we
obviously survived and made it home eventually. Never did get the engine
running
again that trip, but the USCG got our sail fixed so we could sail home.
Coquina versus Floyd, 1999
Coquina 1, Floyd 1
She rode the storm out on her mooring with no problem, but Floyd gets one
point for dragging
the mooring about 100 feet.
Coquina versus Isabel, 2003
Coquina 1, Isabel 0
Despite the wind and tide, not a scratch!
Drying the jib before taking it down.
Stripped bare! No more dodger, no more bimini, no more jib.
Quite a few extra docklines added as well.
Extra reinforcement for the mainsail cover.
Ready to communicate!
Kenwood SSB/ham radio, 2 meter ham radio connected to
APRS tracking device, DSC VHF, Magellan GPS (linked to APRS beacon
DSC VHF and laptop), Icom Handhelds in the chargers, and laptop hooked
to the Kenwood SSB and the GPS for PSK31, AMTOR, NAVTEX, mapping
program, and a few other things too. I have quite a few ways to call for
help
if the boat sinks and I can't manage to swim the 40 feet to the ladder on
the
seawall.
These wicker chairs are soon going to go on a high speed tour
of the Bay if someone doesn't tie them down or take them home.
MOVIE CLIPS - I will be adding these from time to time
(mpg format)
Isabel1 - this is a shot of the marina, 12:30 PM
on 9/18. Wind about 30 knots, so far, so good.
Morning After - This shows the extreme high
tide in the morning.
Oh say can you see.......................................
Coquina in the morning, next to the houseboat which is actually
ON TOP of a finger pier.

Why not to put your boat on the hard - some infrared shots
of Kent Narrows tonight (Sept. 19).
The area is pitch dark, since the power is still off.
